Tempeh is such a delicious yet underutilized plant protein. Like tofu, tempeh is a soy product but it has the additional health benefits from being fermented. It’s nutrient-dense, packed with protein, and contains prebiotics.
Basically, tempeh is a superfood! Unlike its bland counterpart, tempeh has a strong nutty flavor and a nice texture from the intact soybeans.
Tempeh cooks brilliantly on a grill and responds well to bold marinades. This recipe for Hoisin Glazed Tempeh pairs this wonderful vegan protein with a delicious Asian-inspired sauce.
Hoisin Glazed Tempeh
A flavorful marinade that works beautifully with any plant protein.
Ingredients
- 1 package tempeh, cut into desired shapes (halves, cubes, strips, etc)
- 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 2 tbsp coconut aminos, or soy sauce
- 2 tbsp rice vinegar
- 2 tbsp maple syrup
- 1 tbsp avocado oil
- 2 tsp sriracha
Instructions
Begin by steaming the tempeh for 10 minutes using a steamer basket set over boiling water. This step softens up the tempeh and allows it to soak up more of the marinade.
Whisk the rest of the ingredients and pour over tempeh in a shallow bowl. Marinate for at least 30 min.
Grill for about 10 minutes, flipping halfway through. Baste with marinade while grilling.
Notes
Use any leftover hoisin marinade as a sauce for your dinner.
