Easy Creamy Vegan Hot Chocolate

Creamy vegan hot chocolate with coconut whipped cream and crushed candy canes.

There is nothing quite like a rich and creamy hot chocolate on a cold day. My kiddos start begging for this decadent, dairy-free hot chocolate as soon as the temperature drops below 50ºF!

Homemade vs. boxed mixes.

Store-bought hot chocolate mixes tend to be highly processed and contain loads of preservatives. They also generally include ingredients that vegetarians and vegans need to avoid like whey or gelatin(in the form of marshmallows). There is no questioning the ingredients in this scratch-made recipe. This dairy-free hot chocolate is made with common pantry staples and takes less than 10 minutes to make!

How to customize.

This tasty base recipe is made with vanilla extract, but it can easily be customized by using a variety of extracts. Some of my favorites are:

  • Peppermint extract
  • Almond extract
  • Coconut extract
  • Orange extract
  • Rum extract

And while we are at it, why not level-up this amazing hot chocolate recipe with some booze?! Put the kids to bed, and add some of these tasty variations:

  • Butterscotch schnapps
  • Peppermint schnapps
  • Cinnamon schnapps
  • Coffee Liqueur
  • Amaretto

Go crazy, have fun, and of course, remember to add a generous portion of coconut whipped cream on top!

I just started making my own hot chocolate at home and love it! I can’t wait to try your version now. Maybe with a little peppermint?? 🙂

Homemade is so much better than those olde packets! The peppermint addition is so perfect for the holidays, would love to hear how it goes!
